Environment

Let's make sure youth football in Northern Ireland always provides an environment that’s fun and supportive.

Coaches
Same Touchline
Coaches
Coaches stand on the same sideline. This helps show that youth football is about working together and it's not a competition between adults.
Scores / League Tables
U12-U18
Scores / League Tables
Scores and league tables begin from U12 onwards. This makes sure enjoyment and skill development are prioritised over results in younger age groups.
Safeguarding / Welfare
Mandatory Policies
Safeguarding / Welfare
All clubs and youth leagues must fully adopt the Irish FA Safeguarding policies. This ensures the highest standards of safety for everyone.
Playing Time
50% Minimum
Playing Time
Each player must be involved for at least 50% of the game time. This promotes equal opportunities for enjoyment and technical development.
Referees
U10-U18
Referees
Referees are used based on age and game size, recommended from U12 but would be allowed from U10. Environment coordinators are used from U6.
Spectators
Respect Barrier
Spectators
Spectators should maintain a respectful distance (2m) from the pitch and offer positive support, creating an encouraging atmosphere for players.
Playing Out of Age
Learning Environment
Playing Out of Age
A player's participation at different age groups is carefully managed. This balances their individual needs against crucial developmental milestones.
Seasonal Break
Rest / Reflection
Seasonal Break
A break during winter gives leagues, coaches and players an opportunity for rest, reflection, planning and development.
Tournaments / Festivals
Child Centred
Tournaments / Festivals
'Trophy events' should be organised following best practice for each stage of development. This ensures a safe, enjoyable and inclusive environment.
